Introduction to studio lighting for creative portraiture
Dave Hutt, instructor
A three-hour hands-on workshop
Wednesday, September 21, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Workshop information
The workshop has been designed so participants will leave with a basic understanding of how to measure and control lighting, set up studio lights to create a variety of lighting styles and have enough information to be able to start taking creative studio portraits. Demonstrations and lecture include:
- Exploring light quality by looking at direct and indirect lighting sources using grid reflectors, beauty dishes, umbrellas, octobanks and softboxes
- Metering to measure and control lighting ratios between main and fill lights
- Setting up and working in a typical portrait studio—using main, fill, background and hair lights
- Sculpting with light to create close-up, head and shoulder, 3/4 length and full-length portraits
- Exploring lighting techniques used to create “Rembrandt,” glamour and fashion, and editorial style lighting
- Creating low-key, medium and high-key backgrounds
Workshop venue
Dave Hutt’s portrait studio is located in southwest Portland (near Washington Square).
Workshop format
There will be some lecture about setting up your digital camera, covering the principles of lighting and how to set-up a portrait studio without breaking the bank. Most of the workshop will be spent with Dave demonstrating how to create a variety of lighting styles with some hands-on opportunities for participants to manipulate and meter studio lighting while working with a live model.
Each participant will leave with a handbook for future reference.
