Raw and Photoshop—a combined workflow
Explore these powerful photo-editing tools

Workshop information
For creative digital photographers who edit their work, the combination of Raw with Photoshop provides the most powerful combination of tools. There is also some overlap between these programs, so we need to learn what to do where and when for an efficient workflow.
We start with image analysis, as this helps to determine objectives for the workflow. Step by step, the Raw images come alive, to be recreated or interpreted as the photographer determines. In class, this process will be repeated frequently but with the variations required by each image’s needs. The approach is that of problem solving, where there are always many choices that can be made leading to different outcomes.
We will also briefly discuss Bridge, as this allows us to work with both Raw and Photoshop with simplicity and speed. Fortunately, all three programs come as a package when you purchase Adobe Photoshop.
Workshop venue
Northwest Center for Photography (NCP), 1028 SE Water Avenue, Suite 50, Portland, Oregon 97214
Workshop format
The workshop will be conducted in an informal demonstration and discussion style, so there is no need to bring your laptop to class. Using a digital projector, we will examine Raw image files to determine strengths and weaknesses and to identify the editing needed to enhance image quality.
Students receive a practice CD, containing images used in the class, so you can practice at home what you learned in class. A “challenge image” will also be given as a summary for review and discussion during the following class.
About the workshop leader
Gary Hilton has taught photography, film and video production—and geology. Gary combined some of these interests in his graduate thesis in Remote Sensing (interpretation of satellite images for environmental research). He has taught darkroom and photography classes at Portland Community College and has been teaching Photoshop classes for the last eight years. Gary is very enthusiastic about Photoshop and the digital darkroom because it offers photographers tremendous power and control in fine-tuning their expressive interpretations of the photographic image.
About the workshop
Enrollment. Participation is limited to 16 students.
Prerequisites. Some experience with image editing (Photoshop, Lightroom or even black and white darkroom experience) is needed to get the most out of this class. Those without this kind of experience can still learn from this class but will probably need to repeat it to really be able to work independently.
Although some experience with image processing is required, it doesn't matter whether that's with Photoshop, other image editing programs, or darkroom experience. What is important is a familiarity with the concept of image editing. It is preferred that you do not bring a laptop to class.
Workshop tuition. The workshop tuition is $295 per person and includes a $10 non-refundable registration fee.
Withdrawal, Cancellation and Refund Policy. We rely on your attendance to make important arrangements so if, for any reason, you need to withdraw please notify us in writing 15 days or more before the first day of the workshop. At that time, we will refund your deposit, minus the non-refundable registration fee. Registrations cancelled after that will be eligible for a refund (less the non-refundable registration fee and a $15 cancellation fee) only if a replacement can be found. If notification or cancellation is made 7 days or less prior to the first day of the workshop, you will not be eligible for a refund.
NCP is not responsible for a participant's cancellation due to a medical emergency, death in the family or acts of war.
In the event NCP cancels a workshop due to inadequate enrollment, all fees and deposits will be refunded in full, or if you prefer they may be transferred to another workshop within 12 months. However, NCP is not responsible for reimbursement of non-refundable airline tickets in the event of workshop cancellation. We strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance.
There are no exceptions to this Withdrawal, Cancellation and Refund Policy.
Waiting lists. When a workshop fills, we start a waiting list. There is no charge to be on the waiting list. If space becomes available, we contact the first person on the list. That person then has 24 hours to register before we move to the next person. If a space becomes available within 14 days of the start of a workshop, the registrar may call all persons on the waiting list and the space will be given to whoever completes their registration first.
